Diggers Festival 2016: 11th & 12th March 2016


Welcome to the website for the Wellingborough Diggers Festival.  

Friday 11th March

“Injustice and Inequality in the UK” Danny Dorling, Oxford University Professor in conversation with Diggers Patron, Andrew Bradstock. 

Venue: The Friends Meeting House, St John’s St, Wellingborough Time: 7:30pm  Entry Fee: £2.50 Free under 18s 

Saturday 12th March

Talk by Peter Barratt

Suffragette Alice Hawkins was a shoe machinist by trade and mother of six who campaigned for women's rights and went on to be imprisoned five times in her fight for 'the vote'. Great grandson Peter Barratt gives a moving and passionate account of Alice's life and illustrates the talk with memorabilia that once belonged to Alice and is still with the family to this day. 

Venue: “The Bunker”, The Horseshoe Inn, Sheep St., Wellingborough  Time: 12noon-1pm Entry Fee:  Free

Saturday 4pm - late  -  The Horseshoe Inn. Sheep St (6pm-late includes a charge £10/£8 cons entrance fee can be purchased on the door)

Henry Priestman

In 2009 Henry Priestman (writer of The Christians’ 80’s hits) reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter and released his debut solo CD, gainingRadio 2 playlisting. His latest album, “The Last Mad Surge of Youth”, has garnered Henry the best reviews he’s had in 36 years of releasing records. “It’s absolutely brilliant.....he’s found his voice!” Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2. Sophia Vassalos Band

"A group of misfits who have been together since last September, intent on breathing new life into classic favourites old and new - with a range stretching from 1930's New Orleans through to the acoustic blues and folk of today. With a host of instruments, their performance is one big, happy, foot tapping, whiskey soaked jam."

Tim Kirby

Local singer-songwriter Tim Kirby will be performing his self-penned song “Wellingborough” which is about the Wellingborough Diggers.

Michael Buchanan - will be reading some of his poems

There will be other performers and face-painting this year! Face-painting 3:30pm-5:30pm in "The Bunker" of The Horseshoe Inn. Free and not just for the under 5s!

Sunday 13th March 

The Sunday Diggers' Forum for Ideas: New Voices and Different Approaches. 

Venue: Wellingborough Library, Pebble Lane Wellingborough 2:00pm -3:30pm 

This will involve presentations but mainly participation and discussion inspired by the Wellingborough Diggers.  Come along and contribute your views.
